OL&B Completes Y Street Crossing Project

OL&B Completes Y Street Crossing Project

OL&B Railway recently finished up work on replacing the railroad crossing on Y street.
This project was a partnership with the Railroad Transportation Safety District and the City that started back in 2017. They were looking for an improved, long term replacement for the crossing. They wanted to try something new for the possibility of using it in other crossings. The crossing is a pre-cast tub crossing that integrates
the tracks and the road all together instead of being separate. This is the first application of this type of crossing in Nebraska and only the third location in the country for this specific style with the fastening system used. It is designed for simplicity of installation, durability, service life, and to be the smoothest crossing for vehicle traffic.

Project Spotlight: Palmyra Sports Complex

The Palmyra community recently unveiled their new athletic stadium as part of a larger $5.4 million athletic facilities project. The project includes ballfields, competition track, artificial turf playing field, a playground, and a walking path. The project is shared by the village and the school. Beatrice Ready Mixed has supplied 1,500 yards of concrete for building pads, parking lots, driveways, curbs, track runways and sidewalks. The complex is still under construction and will require another 1,500 yards of concrete before completion.

The project has drawn extra attention as the district was set to ask voters to approve a bond issue for funding but found out the Olson Foundation had gifted $5.4 million to cover the cost. The gift happened because Leland Olson, and his family, never forgot how the people of Palmyra and the school helped him while attending the high school. After his father passed, Olson was set to quit school to help run the family business. The community worked with him to help him graduate. He later went on to graduate from college and received a degree from the Nebraska Medical Center.

Olson died in 2013 but his family kept tabs on the community and school and surprised everyone with the gift.

Haymarket Park Named Field of the Year For 19th Season

Haymarket Park has won yet another American Association ‘Playing Surface of the Year’ award, the club and league announced on Tuesday. The Saltdogs have now won the award in every year of existence stretching back to 2001, including five times in the Northern League (2001-2005) and now every year since the American Association’s inception in 2006.

The award isn’t possible without the work of Athletic Turf Manager Jeremy Johnson, his assistant Jen Roeber, the grounds crew at Haymarket Park and the turf management interns who work over the summer. Johnson is a graduate of the University of Nebraska, where he earned a degree in Turfgrass Management, and has been working in sports surface management since 2011. He also has past experience in Major League Baseball with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2012. Roeber is in her 19th year on the staff at Haymarket Park – every season the stadium and playing surface have won the award.

Haymarket Park opened in 2001 and serves as the home of both the Lincoln Saltdogs and Nebraska baseball team. The crew works year-round to ensure the field’s playability during the spring, summer and fall.

This honor is the first the ‘Dogs have been awarded as part of the American Association’s 2019 end-of-season awards, which are voted on by league executives, media members and managers.

Haymarket Park Named Field of the Year For 18th Season

The Lincoln Saltdogs and the American Association jointly announced that Haymarket Park is the league’s ‘Best Playing Field’ for 2018. Haymarket Park has been the Field of the Year for all 18 seasons of its history, as voted on by the league’s field managers and media personnel.

Athletic Turf Manager Jeremy J. and his staff continued to keep Haymarket Park’s field in top condition in his second season in charge. The league features six newer ballparks including two built in the last two years. “Even in its 18th year, and with newer facilities emerging in our league, Haymarket Park continues to be the best field,” Saltdogs President/General Manager Charlie M. said. “Our grounds crew and stadium operations staff, led by Jeremy Johnson and Jen Roeber, meticulously manage one of the best playing surfaces in all of minor league baseball.”

Johnson has a staff of full-time and intern workers who tend to the field throughout the season and throughout the year. “This award would not have been possible without the help and teamwork of the entire staff,” Jeremy said. “I would like to thank Jen R. for her work ethic and communication that was essential to our success this season. I would also like to thank Marcus L., Mike M., and Blake T. for their hard work and attention to detail, our turf intern Kyle T. and our entire grounds crew for their dedication to providing a high quality playing surface.”
